This presses the edges or ears of the barrel dove tail onto the rear sight, locking it in position.You indeed have a Mowrey rifle, which were produced for a while in Olney, Texas. They are a copy of the Allen & Thurber rifles of the 1850's and 1860's, which were produced in Worcester, Massachusetts. The cross drilled flame channel that connects the nipple with the bore will intersect the Heli-Coil® at the bottom.Pyrodex will often fail to fire in a flintlock. It has a higher ignition temperature than pure black. Some shooters start with a 5-10 grain load of real black powder and then some Pyrodex over that. Sounds like a lot of fussing and won't solve your problem. Yeah, the lock isn't the best, and the plastic stocks on the new ones look and feel pretty crummy, and the sights are just plain old ugly. BUT... they're shooters.It is nice and small and reasonably easy to make. The pattern is drawn on 1" squares. The area above the "dot-dash" to the "dash-dash" can be used in one of two ways. 1) folded under and sewn or 2) separate piece from thinner leather and folded as an edging as can be seen in the first photo.1/4" is equal to 6.350 mm. 6.5mm is equal to .2559" but there is no standard 6.5 mm thread. 6.0 mm is equal to .236 inches so it would be undersize in a 1/4-28 hole. Dixie gunworks offers some nipples with oversize threads for the 1/4-28 (.250-28) thread. Among them is a .255, .260, .265 and .270 diameter thread.Step #2. Get familiar with my hunk of wood. The guns had a 1:60" twist, with a shallow .003" to .005" depth, and were specifically built to take big powder charges. Then forge you out a simple strap staple from a coat hanger or 1/8th inch wire. Pre-drill a couple of undersized holes and tap the staple in. Won't effect the value of this horn one bit!
